  Luxor Temple in Luxor
by Paul2001

Luxor Temple is one of the great gems of Luxor. As an attraction it tends to be overlooked by the more famous sights in the region. This is a shame because the temple is quite interesting and I am sure would draw tourist to Luxor even without all the additional attractions that abound in Luxor.
First and foremost if you are going to visit this magnificent temple, then do it before you visit the Temple of Karnak which is about three kilometers north of the Luxor Temple. The more famous Karnak temple dwarfs Luxor Temple in size so that if you visit after visiting Karnak you are apt to be a little dissappointed. This would be a shame because this temple is also very interesting and it should be seen.
The temple itself was founded during the reign of Amenophis II (1417-1379 B.C.) and had substantial additions by later pharohs such as Tutankhamun and Ramses II. Alexander the Great actually sort of "renovated" when he conquered Egypt in the 4th century B.C. The temple has fascinating reliefs, statues and columns contributed by all of these men. They are very well preserved because of the fact that they were covered by sand over the centuries.
This was the first sight that I visted well in Luxor as it was just a block north of my hotel.

Directions: Central Luxor. Luxor Temple might be the most accessible Ancient Egyptian sight in Egypt.
