One of the highlights of my trip was a tour through and a stay in the Kerala backwaters. We traveled from Alleppey into the backwaters, then came out near Changanacherry.
Coconut palms line the waterways ~ oil and coir are made out of the shell. Rice paddies are also lush and extensive.
It's truly a world removed from the rest of India ~ it's so incredibly peaceful and serene. They have problems with flooding each year during monsoon, so for the gravelwallahs, their year is spent gathering gravel and bringing it to build up the banks. . .only for it to wash away and begin again.
The area has a larger proportion of Christians than anywhere else in India, so you'll see lots of lovely white-washed churches.
