At the western edge of Kensington Gardens/Hyde Park stands Kensington Palace, a less ornate residence than Buckingham or St James. Although this was the London home of Princess Diana at the time of her death, its association with the royal family dates back to the 17th century. William III purchased it in 1689 after his ascension. Several sovereigns have died here, author William Thackeray died at No. 2 in 1863. Queen Victoria was born here and continued to live here until her ascension in 1837.
