This golden stupa (Buddist relgious monument) is the highlight of Yangon. Plan to spend at least a full afternoon here, as there is just so much to see! I really liked seeing all the various forms of buddha (wood, silver, gold, etc). Especially interesting is the U Nyo pavilion, full of woodcarvings depicting scenes of Buddha's life and the pavilion which houses King Tharawaddy Min's bell (the ceiling is made using lacquer - beautiful!). It costs $5 US to enter the complex, plus a small camera fee. And of course you have to take off your shoes!

If you know on what day of the week you were born, then you can figure out your planetary post (and its corresponding corner of the site) and your animal sign. Since I am Saturday's child, my planet is Saturn and my animal is the naga (dragon serpent).

We spent 2 hours talking to some monks we met here about Buddism. See my local customs tips for the rest of the story :)

Also see my Burma Photo Album travelogue for more.

Directions: Central Yangon. You can see it from miles around!
