"Rossio and its surroundings" Top 5 Page for this destination Praça Dom Pedro IV - Place du Rossio Tip by acemj

This photo was taken from the Elevador de Santa Justa looking down on Rossio. The train station is in the direction of the top left corner of this frame and there is another square to the right called Praca da Figueira with a beautiful equestrian statue of Dom Pedro IV.

The pavement in Rossio is a great example of the typical Portuguese mosaic patterns that you'll find on pavements throughout the city in public places. The beautiful designs are the results of hard labor done in the 19th century by prison work crews who pounded the white limestone and gray basalt cubes into a bed of sand below. The swirling, somewhat dizzying designs are beautiful, but don't look at them too hard if you've been drinking or you might just lose your lunch!!
