  The Gift Box
by filipdebont

On the picture you can see a small box on a chain. Well in fact it is a gift box at the entry of The Maagdenhuis (Girls House). The gift box is marked with the sign: For the poor.

For ages girls which became orphans, were place in the Maagdenhuis (Girls House).

For the boys there was an other place near the Paardenmarkt (horse market). This house was built by a rich merchant and was used till 1882.

At that time it was custom that the rich gave pieces of money and pieces art at the Orphanage as form of charity (and also to buy their place in heaven).

That is the main reason why this Maagdenhuis has such a rich art collection. Here you can see pieces of art made by Rubens, Jordaens and Van Dijck.
