Peter Paul Rubens : One of Antwerp’s Most Famous.
His life :
He was born on June the 28th in 1577 in the German city Siegen (note both his parents were from Antwerpen).
In 1589, His mother and her 4 children moved to Antwerpen again.
Peter Paul was apprenticed with the Antwerp painters Tobias Verhaecht, Adam Van Noort en Otto Van Veen.
In 1598 he joined the St Lucas guild as a Master.
From 1600 till 1608 he stayed in Italy, in that period he was the Court painter of Vicenzo I Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua.
In 1609, a year after his return, he became the City painter of Antwerpen and the Court painter of Archdukes Albrecht and Isabelle. In that same year, he married with Isabelle Brandt, they had three children together.
All the most important churches in Antwerpen were (are) decorated with his paintings and the paintings of his workshop.
In 1626 his first wife died. In an attempt to escape from his sorrow, Rubens accepted a political mission in Madrid. In Spain, he worked for Philips IV, who gave him another diplomatic mission in 1629, this time in London at the Court of Charles I.
Even this time Art and Politics went together.
By the way, he was knighted by the English King, because of his important role in the realisation of the peace between England and Spain.
Back in Antwerpen the 53 years old Master married the much younger (36 years younger) Helena Fourment, five more children were the result of this marriage.
The last 10 years of his life, Rubens still made many more masterpieces.
Rubens died at 30 May 1640 and was buried in the St Jacobs Church.
In total Rubens and his workshop made about 2000 paintings (600 were made by the Master himself).
