The Louvre has evolved other the centuries from a fortress, a castle, and a palace before finally becoming the world's greatest museum. Art from the centuries -- nay, the millennia -- adorn the galleries and walls, and in some places even figures as part of the wall (grazie, Sandro Botticelli). Two of the greatest known works of art are housed here, the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo.
