St Sophia as seen from courtyard of Sultanahmet
by mrclay2000

As the key landmarks in Istanbul, the range between St Sophia and the Blue Mosque is without question the most trafficked part of the city. Where tourists go, vendors follow, and few cities have such a hybrid of vendors as Istanbul. You want your tennis shoes shined? No problem. You want simit? No problem. You want postcards? No problem. Would you like to buy a spinning top? We have one! Not until you've reached the inner sanctum of either the museum or the mosque have you gained a temporary respite from these good-natured but terribly persistent banditti.

Directions: Sultanahmet, First Hill
