The Scheepvaarthuis was built between 1913 and 1916 and finished between 1926 and 1928. Technical realisation by Van Gendt A.Lzn en architectural design by J.M. van der Mey.
The Scheepvaarthuis is regarded as the first building that is purely Amsterdam School. It housed six shipping companies. The design had to be a memory of the great Dutch shipping tradition and many references can be found in the building to Cornelis Houtman who set off in 1595 as the first captain to the East Indies.
