Westminster Abbey across the street from Parliament is the burial place of England's monarchs, and many of its most illustrious and talented sons. Unfortunately, the centuries have not been kind to the Abbey. Even by the early 18th century Daniel DeFoe called it "a venerable old pile." The Abbey is presently undergoing a face lift, switching out the soft Bath stone for the harder-wearing Portland stone, giving it a patchy complexion. The white towers at the west end are ornaments from Christopher Wren, which is one shining example where he degraded rather than enhanced an appearance.
