Bergen is known as the Gateway to the Fjords. All around the city you have the amazing scenery of theses Fjords. The lush green vegetation of the surrounding area is clearly visible from this town.

It was originally founded by King Olav Kyrre in 1070 and was the largest town in Norway during the medieval times. Very little of the medieval city now survives. The city is built around the harbour and is noted for its fishing industry. Alongside the small fishing vessels you will find the larger cruise ships and North Sea ferry services.

The major economic income revolves around the oil industry located in the North Sea. It is now the second largest city in Norway and has a large number of students within its boundaries. I have to admit that the Bergen I saw isn't quite the old fashioned, picturesque town that I had imagined.

In the year 2000 it was designated as a city of culture.

Some of the best places to visit in the area are: St Mary's Church, Bryggen, Hakonshallen, and the Funicular Railway.

Address: Bergen, Norway
