"Watch a "trial" at the Gothic portal" Valencia Things to Do Tip by DanielF

Also known as the Portal of the Apostles, this is the entrance to the cathedral from the Square of Our Lady. It owes its name to the fact that the columns sustaining the arches in this portal are decorated with sculptures of the Apostles. As it was usual in the Middle Ages, these sculptures were originally policromated, but time and weather inclemences have by now taken a good toll and they are currently in a rather bad condition.

This portal is famous for being the meeting place of the Valencian "Court of Water" . This "Court" is the most important example of consuetudinary application of Law in Europe. Water is the most valuable resource in this land which founded its wealth upon an intensive agriculture that relies on an efficient management of the hydric ressorces. Since the dawn of times, agricultors have solved their differences on the repartition of water according to ancestral rules that are applied by this Court whose members are respected agricultors of the area. The Court meets here every Thursday at noon.
