  Shakespeare's House
by margaretvn

Visit Strafford upon Avon which is a lovely town which is on the west bank of the river Avon. The town actually dates back to Roman times but now it looks like a Tudor market town. There are lovely houses which are half timbered and there are some lovely walks along the river.
Of course the town is famous because of its connections with William Shakespeare and it attracts lots of tourists so it can get very very busy.
Shakespeare's Birthplace was almost entirely reconstructed in the 19th century, but in the style of the original Tudor building. The house was bought for the nation in 1847 - then it was a public house. It was converted back to the Elizabethan style house. The exhibits are associated with Shakespeares father are on display. His father, John, was a glovemaker and wool merchant. In the room where it is said that Shalespeare was born (although it is not certain) the window has the names of visitors etched in it. One visitor was Sir Walter Scott.
William Shakespeare was born on St George's Day - 23rd April 1564 and died in 1616
