South Africa is known to be one of the worlds most violent countries. I never had any trouble when i was there but i heard plenty of stories of people who did, so it DOES happen and not all made up in the press. Jo'burg is the worst, but i heard of robbery incidents even in smaller places like Jeffreys Bay. The best advice is to be sensible, dont go walking alone at night in unsafe areas, always seek local advice. Take taxis at night. Check that where you are walking in the day is safe too because robberies happen at day as well as night!
