Hallstatt is one of the oldest villages in Austria and even in Europe.
Even a whole epoche of the stone-age is called "Hallstatt-time".
And in this small village of nowadays with 3000 inhabitants dead bodies will be burried in the graveyard only for a rather short time. A fe years later they will be ex-humated, and their bones will be stored inside the so called "Beinhaus" - (Bone-house)
The head-bones will be decorated and the names of the dead souls will be written on it...
In Hallstatt you may also see an interesting museum about the salt-mining and local customs.
