"Han Chinese" China Favorite Tip by Sharrie

China General: 367 reviews and 336 photos

Favorite thing: Essentially, Chinese is the broad category applied to the people of China both residing in China & overseas. In essence, majority of the descendants of this ancient civilization are the HAN CHINESE. Almost 90+% of China's population are made up of this category. The rest are composed of China's 55 minority nationalities, for example, the Tibetans, Mongols & Turkic-descended Uighurs.

Some of the common surnames of the Han Chinese are Li (or sometimes spelt as Lee), Wang (or Ong), Zhang (or Cheung), Liu (or Lau), & Chen (or Chan). Today, China only has around 3100 surnames but almost 1/5 of the total population of China (about 350+ millions) share the above mentioned 5 surnames! So, mistaken identities are common & wrong arrests are often reported!
