Between Sydney and Newcastle there lies a stretch of delightful beaches backed by inland lakes and bays called the Central Coast. If you have a couple of days they could be well spent exploring the nooks and crannies that reward the curious visitor.
Some of the beaches - Killcare, Maitland Bay, Copacabana, McMasters, Avoca, Terrigal etc., rank with the best you'll find anywhere in Australia. The bad news is that Australians know about them but there'll still be plenty of room for tourists for years to come. If you expect 6 lane highways right to them you are apt to be disappointed as well. Some of the roads are tortuously windy but the scenery at times is nothing less than spectacular.
