Caesarea is the most important archeological sight in Israel. It is a large and still be excavated sight that is one of the truly must see destinations outside of Jerusalem. What for makes the sight especially awesome is Caesarea's setting on the sea. The Mediterranean is quit stunning as the surf splashes against the sights.
The town itself served as a Phonician port in the 4th century. Alexander the Great captured the city in that same century. It served as the capital of Roman held Judea at the time of Christ. In Medieval times when the sight was fortified by Medieval walls, it served as a base for the Crusaders, most notably Richard the Lion Heart. Much of the Medieval wall serve today. Also of interest is the Roman aqueduct that sits about one kilometer north of the sight. It has a great setting by the sea.

Directions: Most people approach Caesarea from Tel-Aviv however I visited the sight as a daytrip from Haifa. It is about halfway between these to cities and easily reached by bus.
