"Second Oldest in Paris" Basilique Cathédrale de Saint-Denis Tip by mrclay2000

The claim for oldest Gothic church in France belongs to the Basilique St Denis north of Paris, the repository of French kings that in my mind blows away Westminster Abbey. Next to Notre Dame (the oldest Gothic church IN Paris), the second oldest is St Germain des Pres. Despite the similarity in style, St Germain is much less adorned, its single bell-tower hardly worthy of comparison with Notre Dame and its buttresses seemingly unnecessary in the general plan, yet its interior offers life and color to supplement a plain exterior. The second oldest Gothic church in Paris dates from about 1200.
