On September 17, 1862, approximately 22,000 Americans fell from rifle or cannon fire, bursting shrapnel or bayonet wounds in corn fields and grassy hilltops in the tiny enclave of Antietam, Maryland. Up to that time America little understood the full context of the Civil War, since newspaper and wire reports contained no photographs (too expensive a medium except for diplomats and millionaires). After the battle, Matthew Brady's wartime photographs brought home to every American hearth the true horrors of the War Between the States.
