Castel Sant'Angelo, Rome: 146 reviews and 289 photos
The name comes from the statue of the angel Michaël that stands on the top of the round fortress. The castle has been used for many purposes since it has been finished in 139 AD. It first served as a mausoleum for Hadrianus, but later on it functioned, as a part of the Aurelian Wall, being a strong fortress for defencive actions. Then it was a popal residence and finally a military prison. It now houses a museum with 58 rooms which show the history of the cake-like castle. The beautiful bridge Ponte Sant´Angelo with the 12 angels leads to the entrance.
