"art deco" Hawke's Bay Tip by margaretvn

Hawke's Bay, New Zealand: 8 reviews and 9 photos

visit the beautiful Art Deco city of Napier. It is well known for its Art Deco buildings. In 1931 earthquake and fire destroyed the city and killed many people. The quake raised the harbour bed and raised marshland which provided new farmland. When the city was rebuilt an earthquake-proof building code was enforced. The architects adopted the fashionable Art Deco style. The city?s buildings are in pastel colours and with bold and elaborate lines.

Address: the buildings are throughout the city
