  the beehive houses of sarouji
by call_me_rhia

A while ago, while looking at some travel photos, I saw similar mud buildings... but these were located in Mali... very far from Syria, culturally and geographically. Imagine my surprise of finding similar mud-brick structures near Hama... of course I had to go there. Fortunately enough many are located in the village of Sarouji, just a few miles down the road from Ibn Wardan. What a wonderful experience - it's hard to imagine that people used to inhabit such "houses" - then again, looking at the poor concrete buildings where they live now, these beehive houses seem a lot more comfortable and adapted to the climate (chilly in winter, roasting hot in summer). Most are now used as storage for grain or cereals, others have been turned into shelters for animals - one flies its door open to visitors, thanks to a nice bedouin family who saw it as a way to round up their meagre income by serving tea and cakes to the few that venture out there. A lovely visit - amazing simple architecture of the past.
