This glacier borne boulder marks the start of the Bumpass Hell Trail. A three mile walk through the most active geothermal attractions in the park. Legend has it that an early guide in the area, K.V. Bumpass, stepped through the thin crust and scalded his leg in the sulphurous boiling waters beneath. He joked that it was an early venture into hell, thus the name Bumpass Hell. These days, there are boardwalks built over the treacherous areas so visitors are unlikely to be harmed by the scalding water and mud.
