entering the city through its ancient gates

Some of the ancient gates are still intact and are in constant use by the resident Turks and their foreign guests. In many places it is possible to roam upon the walls, or to easily enter and exit the city by turns. Otherwise you have to wait -- sometimes several hundred meters -- for the next gate. You'll notice a distinct difference in this photo from the older, bottom half of the wall to its rebuilt upper half (all 5th century).
