It is a nice morning's activity to drive to the base of Mt. Palomar and then take the short hike (mile or two) up to the summit and poke around the observatory. It is also possible to drive all the way to the top.

The observatory used to be the big cheese of world observatories prior to WOrld War II. And it still is an impressive achievement and some scientists still utilize the facilities. It is associated with Cal Tech. However, the observatory while situated in thin air with relatively few nights of cloud cover, is also situated within the umbrella of Los ANgeles' light pollution. Unfortunately, this light pollution makes the observatory a fraction as useful as it would be in a more desolate location.
