This region, east of Halong Bay, is just as beautiful as its famous neighbor.
The limestone formations are just as bizarre and spectacular and there are also larger islands with excellent beaches.
The whole region has not yet been discovered by travelers, nobody speaks English and the people are all very friendly and interested.
The best way to explore the area is to charter a boat, but there are also ferries from Van Don, the main island, to other more remote islands such as Quan Lan.
Quan Lan is the island with the most beautiful beaches. To reach them from the pier, just walk over the dunes to the other side of the island, it's only a 15 min walk.
In the village, there's even a little "hotel" (two basic rooms) and you can organize something to eat.
In spite of the beautiful scenery, a Westerner is still the main attraction here, this place definitely doesn't see a lot of tourists.
