"Lake Taupo." New Zealand Things to Do Tip by worldkiwi

Lake Taupo is in the centre of North Island. In the distance you can see the central North Island volcanoes on a clear day. The town and lake are popular summer camping spots for kiwis and many people have holiday homes there. It wasn't until a recent trip south, when I passed through Taupo, that I realised what the draw was. Beautiful clear water bays, secluded camping spots, and a holiday atmosphere in Taupo town... all make the place look good on a fine day. If you like fishing, this is a popular spot.
It's a lot quiter in winter of course, but with the Tongariro National Park a stone's throw away, it makes a good hiking base too.
Lake Taupo is actually a giant flooded volcanic caldera (the size of Singapore). The last time it blew up it flattened everything on the North Island and turned the sky red in the northern hemisphere!
