If you want to experience some Nepalese and Tibetan culture and see the great Himalayas wothout leaving India, the Darjeeling is the place for you.
In the Darjeeling travelogue I have gathered some pics from the place, and on this picture you can see Tibetan Women at the Tibetan Self Help Centre located just outside central Darjeeling.
To get to Darjeeling, first go to the city of Shiliguri. From here buses and jeeps depart several times a day for Darjeeling. Try to travel while the daylight is still there because the trip uphill is itself an amazing experience. In the roughly 4 hours it takes to get to Darjeeling you will have left the Bengal plains and gradually seen the landscape and the people shifting. And the temperature. You may have to get an extra sweater up there!
