Many of the dunes seemed hollow when stomped upon, which gives rise to the warning that subsidence into the dunes might cause rapid suffocation. Listen to the park radio and adhere to these warnings. Though White Sands seems like an endless sandbox for the young and old alike, the loose sand can be an enormous joy as well as a potential threat. Perhaps it is best to venture out with a partner.
