"Oistens Chattel House" Barbados Things to Do Tip by pilgrim55

This is a chattel house in Oistens. They really are all over the island. Originally, they housed the slaves from Africa and the endentured servants from Ireland that were brought over to work in the sugar cane fields. The houses are so small that they could be picked up and hauled from field to field as the workers worked from one field to the next. People still live in these houses today, although they are free men.
One of the Bajans that we talked to said that they did not resent being brought over as slaves anymore. They are free men now living a far better life than they feel they would have if they still lived in Africa.
