"Halloween" United States of America Local Custom Tip by heplion

United States of America Local Customs: 260 reviews and 260 photos

When I travel, one of the questions that gets asked alot is "what is Halloween like in the US? Well, halloween is celebrated on October 31st and is a day dedicated to children getting free candy, and everybody getting to shed their identities for awhile and be whomever they want to be. People dress up in strange costumes and go to parties or go on hay rides (usually a tractor drawn wagon filled with hey). Children dress up and go house to house knocking on doors and asking for candy. Halloween celebrations have mellowed a bit in the new generation with the fear of poisened candy and terrorism. I remember being young and going out on my own from house to house for hours collecting candy, but then people started putting razorblades in the candy and things started changing. When my grandfather was young they would play pranks on people on halloween. Things like slding the outhouse back a few feet so the whole was in front of the door, or taking apart some farm equipment and reassembling it on the roof of the barn....
