This square began to take shape in the 17th century. At this time it lay just outside the fortifications on the Southern part of the city. After the demolition of the town walls in the 18th century the Western end was planted out with trees and named Promenáda (The Promenade). At the eastern end the of the square the Guild Theatre was built and the square became known as Divadelné námestie (Theatre Square). Its present title is in honour of the great Slovak poet P O Hviezdoslav, a statue of whom can be found in the centre of the square
