The Wawel was the seat of Polish dukes before the 10th.century. From the reign of King Casimir the Reviver, Odnowiciel, the Wawel become the seat of Polish kings. It was for over 500 years.
During the reign of Sigismund the Old, the Wawel had its "Golden Age". The Renaissance residence was ordered by Zygmunt the Old, Stary, after the 1499 fire which destroyed the Gothic structure put up by Lokietek and Kazimierz Wielki. The castle was created 1507-36 by Italian architects.
