Luckily someone at the hostel told me that I could get a train to the Blue mountains otherwise I probably would have spent $70 + going with a tour bus. It is soo easy to get to and very enjoyable visiting alone. You also get a free Visitors walking map with all the highlights marked.

When I got there I went into the tourist info place outside the station and bought a $22 'blue mountains explorer bus ticket' which retrospectively was a waste of money. I could easily have walked to the Katoomba National park from the station and I spent so much time there that i only had time to go to one other place on the bus route - even that was very rushed.

Katoomba is a very peaceful place to be. I spent 5-6 hours walking through the woodland, looking at streams, waterfalls, the sandstone cliffs.

Walking up the steep steps was hard work and you have to be very fit, but you can take one of the sky lifts back up.

Directions: Train from Sydney to Katoomba railway station takes around 2 hours. Tickets are cheaper after 9am.
