One of the ferries in the race - Aust. Day 2001
by lachydragon

This is an annual event that has been the centrepiece of my family's Australia Day events for many years. Basically the inner-harbour ferries get decorated with their sponsors logos and balloons etc and have a small race up the harbour with a huge flotilla of little spectators vessels, harbour-cruise boats, mulit-million dollar yachts, kayaks and family dinghys. Living in the inner suburbs of Sydney, the harbour holds a special place in my heart and the ferry race captures the fun and life of the harbour!

Good vantage points are along the harbour beaches between the Harbour Bridge and Bradley's Head (where the ferrys turn aorund and return down the harbour) - bring a picnic rug some cold meats and a bottle of champagne and make it a real Australia Day on the harbour!!
