Kapiti Island is located out from Paraumumu Beach which is North of Wellinton.
It is a protected Island and can only be visited with a permit.
It is run by DOC Department of Conservation.
There are three public tracks two lead to the summit and one to the other end more along the coast.
The tracks to the top can take aprox. 3hrs return, although the time is dependant also on how long you stop to hopefully see the bird life.
From the lookout at the top you can see the coastline and the beach town of Paraparaumu and the area known as the Kapiti Coast.
Because the birdlife is protected our backpacks were even checked for vermin before boarding the boat. The departure and landing back in Paraparaumu can be exiting as it is a surf beach, so no jetty but board the boat which is then backed out by tractor into the surf, coming home we drove into the trailer at speed which was interesting.
