It is written in our travel book that Antiche Cantine Ardenghi is"a leap of local faith and an excellent splurge. Effervescent Michael and his wife, Lucia, proudly cook Venetian for a handful of people each night by reservation only. You must call first. You pay €50 per person and trust them to wine, dine, and serenade you with Venetian class. The evening can be quiet or raucous depending on who and how many are eating." It was relatively quiet when we were there. "While the menu is heavy on crustaceans, Michael promises to serve plenty of veggies and fruit as well." Then at the end you are invited to a shot of Grappa. Drink it if you dare. We did!!

See below for directions. There’s no sign, the door’s locked, and the place looks closed. But knock, say the password (La Repubblica Serenissima), and you’ll be admitted.

It was truely the best dining experience we had in all of Italy.
