"Viewing Santiago from El Cerro" Chile Things to Do Tip by Ames24

Chile Things to Do: 351 reviews and 652 photos

Apparently, on that Cerro, are planted all kinds of species of trees from all over the world. You drive around and around and around and around up the Cerro to almost the top. On the very top of the Cerro is a huge Mary statue, inside the statue, behind a barred opening, is a very graphic Jesus on the cross, on the floor a case with a Bible or something inside it. People toss packets of little candles inside. From the foot of the Mary you can go look out in all directions over the sprawling city of Santiago. You can't really see the end of it. It is surrounded by the Andes so that's the reason for the smog as seen in the picture. Also on the top of the Cerro is a sizeable Cathedral, that from the outside does not look very large. It's quite solemn when you walk in. All over are painted images of the "Saints". There is an outdoor area of seating for a mass up there as well. And of course below that where you park, a small souvenir/snack place.
