  Calligraphy in Ulu Cami
by Sharrie

ULU CAMI (Grand Mosque), also known as the "Great Mosque" was built by Beyazit I (known as Yildirim to the Turks) between 1398 - 1400. The great mosque has 20 domes with 12 pillars is the 1st big mosque built by the Ottomans. Within the mosque, calligraphic inscriptions are found all over the mosques. The Ottomon version of Turkish Islam was primarily political where the sultan is the swordsman of Islam & Allah's shadow on earth.
