  Topkapi Sarayi (Palace)
by Sharrie

Harem in the TOPKAPI SARAYI (PALACE), home to as many as 4000 women is what intrigues most visitors on their visit to the Topkapi Palace, "city" of the Ottoman sultans for about 400 years. Known as "the new palace" in the very beginning, it was later called "the cannon gate palace" in the 19th century. Today, it serves as a museum housing a variety of treasures. It was originally a center of administration & not a royal residence, but Roxelana, a former slave changed all that in 1540s. She became the wife of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent & arranged the seraglio to become of the home of the sultan & all his female entourage.
