"Sumba" Indonesia Favorite Tip by iwent

Favorite thing: Sumba is visited by fewer tourists than the other Indonesian islands.

The wet season lasts from December to March. The rest of the year it is a very dry island. It is different from the rest of Indonesia as it is not a volcanic. There are beautiful, isolated beaches with pure white sands. Unfortunately there is no accommodation nearby.

Air Merpati flies to Waingapu. Waingapu is also served by Pelni ferries from / to Kupang (Timor), via Sabu or Ende (Flores).

The trans Sumba highway is relatively flat, straight and well-surfaced. The usual means of transport is bus or bemo. They are small and overcrowded. Besides they stop every two metres to pick up new passengers. Even if they come apart at the seams, more people are stowed in and you are kindly asked to move over.

The good thing is that they collect and drop you off at your hotel. The bad thing is that if you are the first to be collected your bemo will tour the village to pick up more passengers, cruising the same roads up and down and down and up, until your bemo is chock-full.
