"DUNROBIN CASTLE" Dornoch Off The Beaten Path Tip by hevbell
Dornoch Off The Beaten Path: 9 reviews and 10 photos
About one mile north of Golspie is Dunrobin Castle, the seat of the Sutherland family. The castle itself, designed by Sir Charles Barry and modeled on a French chateau, is like something out of a fairlytale with all its turrets etc
The Sutherlands were once Europes biggest landowners with a staggering 1.3million acres but were also one of the principal driving forces behind the Highland clearances. So its worth remembering that all this wealth came at a cost to many thousands of crofters.
Still I found the castle to be one of the most interesting I'd been round with lots of family mementoes and also plenty information but not presented in a boring way. The guides in the 17 rooms on display were also very helpful - it was one of them who told us about the connection with Carbisdale Castle and the clock tower there.
