A UNESCO World Hertitage Site run by the State of Illinois, located just outside St. Louis, Missouri. These remants of a complex Mississippian culture who lived here from roughly 700 to 1400 CE beckon visitors off nearby I-55/70. The base of the largest mound, Monk’s Mound, covers more ground than the Great Pyramid of Cheops. At its peak, around 1200, more people lived here (20,000) than in London and it wasn’t until 1800 that a US city reached a higher number of inhabitants.
