The Rottnest Hotel is one of the upmarket hotels on the island. It was once a stately Colonial style mansion and the official summer residence for the Governors of Western Australia. It was built in 1864 and recognised as one of the finest examples of Mid-Victorian architecture remaining in Western Australia. Originally it was named the Governor's Cottage to signify its junior rank to "Government House" on the mainland. It seems that the Governors usually spent up to two months each year on the island with their butler, servants and carriages. In 1953 the building was converted into the "Rottnest Hotel". I have to say that while the view was great ? we were right on the beach with our own balcony, the décor was pretty run down and the cost of the room didn?t run cheap.
