On my London trip in August 2015 I was especially interested in seeing The Shard. It is a 310 metres tall skyscraper, which was the tallest building in Europe from its inauguration in July 2012 until October 2012. At the time of writing it is still the tallest building in the European Union.

The Shard was designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano and it is owned by a British property group and the State of Qatar.

Its 95 storeys are occupied by offices, residences, restaurants and a hotel. A public viewing observatory called "The View from the Shard" can be found on levels 68 to 72. Discount tickets have to be booked online, but are timed and dated. A limited number of tickets can be bought on the spot for an approximately 20 % higher price.

So far I didn't go up to the viewing platforms as the weather wasn't perfect for such a visit.

The Shard stands on the righ side of the river Thames in the Southwark district of Central London.
The nearest tube station is London Bridge.

Another one will be built in the City Of London with just 9 metres lower than the Shard with restaurants and a viewing platform. It should finish by 2019 or maybe earlier as work have already started.

Reminds me of the Transamerica building in San Francisco, somehow.

I didn't know for this building even is tallest. I read its official site - prices are high, of course.

I also considered going up, but finally didn't do it either, for the same reason. Maybe some other year.
