The pink city of the nabateans... who hasn't heard of it? it's as wonderful as you thought it would be, and maybe even more. Petra is stone: colourful stone and stone-carved buildings that leaves you breathless, and speechless. Petra's special to me because, after having been abandoned after an earthquake, it was rediscovered by a swiss explorer in 1812 (Johann Burckhardt) - and it's not everyday that you get to see something significant connected with a Swiss (call it nationalistic pride if you want). Top places you should not miss in Petra include Al-Khazneh (Treasury); the Roman Amphitheater; Al-Madbah (The Altar); the Nympheum and Royal Tombs; Ad-Dair (Monastery); Qasr Al-Bint (Castle of Pharaoh's daughter) and the Shrine of Haroon (Aaron, Moses' brother).
