GATEWAY OF INDIA, Mumbai: 7 reviews and 6 photos
Favorite thing: The Gateway of India is the principal landmark of Mumbai built in 1911 to commemorate the visit of the then ruler of India - King George V and Queen Mary. The archway was designed by George Wikket and is located at Apollo Bunder. The monument is infact the first in Mumbai to be built using a concrete structure. It is built similar to an arch of triumph in most places and it was here that many of the previous heads of state, viceroys, governors and topmost civil servants of the erstwhile Raj were received and welcomed as they disembarked from their steamers off the Bombay Docks!!! You will still find flocks of visitors coming down to see this monument from near and far. Be wary of the photographers who will try to take your pictures for a fee and then send it to you at your home address. Go for the Polaroid ones so that you get an instant picture if at all you want one!!! The ferry rides to Elephanta caves and also to Alibag which is a beach resort near Mumbai leave from here. The half hour joy rides in motor launches that give you a nice view of the harbour from the sea and a view of some of the big ships anchored nearby also leave from here.
