You just cannot come to Malta without seeing Valetta. Valetta is the capital city of the country, and was built by the so-called "Knights of St. John". The town is small but hilly, so walking is a good option if you don't mind going up and down some hills. The main street is called Republic Street, and it runs about 600 meters and is lined by shops and restaurants. It is worth venturing off this street on to the side streets to get away from the tourist shops. Be sure not to miss St. John's Co-Cathedral, as the inerior is amazing. It is also worth taking a tour of the Grand Master's Palace, which is quite amazing. When you arrive to Valetta at the main bus terminus (where you'll see the beautiful fountain, walk into the city of Valetta through its main gate and hang an immediate right. There you will find the tourist information office which will provide you with maps of Malta and a free walking tour brochure of Valetta as well as Floriana.

ONE THING I WOULD DEFINITELY NOT MISS IS...the chance to walk the main street of Valetta late at night when all of the people are gone*--then you can really soak in the atmosphere. This evening stroll was the highlight of Valetta to me--I had it all to myself!
